Let’s face it: Our immune systems could all use the occasional boost now and then. One of the easiest ways to get extra immunity is through a few specific teas that are loaded with immune-boosting nutrients. Here are a few that’ll help you sail through sniffle season:
Matcha. All green tea is anti-inflammatory and adaptogenic due to its active chemical ECEG, one of the most studied antioxidant compounds. “From orally ingested to topical administration, the benefits of this plant are astounding,” says Elizabeth Trattner, AP, DOM. But matcha—the whole-leaf powdered version of green tea—has even more antioxidant power. “It also contains high amounts of L-theanine, which helps induce a state of calmness and also relaxes the mind,” says Trattner.
Ginger Tea. An ancient herb, ginger has high levels of different micronutrients that have been shown to improve everything from digestive health to inflammation. As an immunity tonic, ginger warms the body and helps cleanse the lymphatic system of built-up toxins. Ginger tea can either be bought in tea packets, or brewed yourself by using an inch or two of fresh ginger and boiling it in water for 10 minutes.
Liquid Turmeric Tea. Though well known as a bright orange spice in the culinary world, turmeric can be beneficial as a powerful anti-inflammatory tonic as well. Simply mix a cup of coconut milk, a cup of water, a teaspoon of turmeric, and a tablespoon of ghee. Heat for two minutes. Add honey for sweetness.
